Is there anyway to get the smell of dog odor/urine out of a carpet without having them professionally cleaned?
October 5th, 2010When my husband and I moved in together our dogs had an alpha war (male and female) to see who could pee in the most places. Despite my best efforts, constant vacuuming, scrubbing, a Bissel Pet cleaner, etc I cannot for the LIFE of me get the smell out of our carpet.
My mother suggested having it professionally cleaned and we are going to do that when the two of us aren’t so pressed for time. I’m a full-time student who works 20-25 hours a week, with a commuting distance of about 45 minutes to school. And my husband works anywhere between 60-70 hours a week with crazy hours and once a month has drill with ARNG.
One of us wants to be here when the carpet cleaners come so it might be couple of weeks, maybe even a month, or so before we can someone out here since the place within our budget is closed on the weekends.
Does anyone have any home remedies? I am trying soooo hard to keep a clean house but it seems pointless when my immaculate apartment stinks!
What's the best way to remove dog / pet hair from clothes and fabrics?
October 4th, 2010I have 2 dogs which leave a trail of hair everywhere they’ve been, all over my clothes when i’ve been play fighting with them, on the car seats and on the sofa upholstery.
I’ve tried the usual sticky rollers which seem to to a reasonable job of removing the surface hairs but struggle with the ones which are partially stuck through the fabric like needles, I find that they loose their stickiness very quickly also.
I’ve also tried the rubber glove trick and vacuum cleaners which again get the surface hairs off but don’t succeed with the ones that are stuck through the fabric.
Even when I wash my clothes, some of many of the hairs are still there when I get them out of the washing machine.
Does anybody have any knowledge of a good tool or technique that will do what I want or am I just wishing for the impossible?
Many Thanks

Which is the best vacuum to pick up dog hairs?
September 27th, 2010My dog sheds year round, but even more so in the summertime. I’ve gone through several vacuum cleaners that work at first, then stop altogether. I dismantle the hose and clean out the hairs if they clog but I can’t get adequate. What could be wrong? Can you recommend a vac that really picks up pet hair effectively?
best vacuum cleaners?
September 26th, 2010What kind of vacuum cleaner works best for long hair?
May 13th, 2010My husband has really long, really strong hair. We’ve killed quite a few vacuum cleaners with his hair (the hair wraps around the spinny thing and inevitably breaks the motor). Because of this, I’m assuming I can’t get that kind of vacuum cleaner: stand up vacuum with the spinning brush. What type and/or brand of vacuum should I get?
I appreciate the advice so far, but I was doing exactly that. I have done that so many times, even in one run through the house. He has reeeeeaally long hair and lots of it (he sheds a lot). But unless there’s another option, I’ll just have to stick to wood and tile.

Cleaning the carpet in my apartment?
May 1st, 2010When we moved in 2 months ago there were a few stains on the carpet, but otherwise it looked clean. I vacuum once a week just on principle I like to walk on clean carpet. However, I got a puppy for christmas and she’s already mostly house broken. We’ve just had maybe 3 or 4 accidents. I noticed she went on the stained parts of the carpet. Our carpet is a medium brown color and the stains are just a little darker so I wasn’t too worried and noted it on my move in check list. As I was cleaning the accidents, I noticed quite a bit of dirt coming up also. I wanted to steam clean, but I know that some steam cleaners actually soak the carpet which can cause the carpet to not get completely dry in some areas leading to mold or rotting. I’m not sure what to do because it’s killing the neat freak in me that the floor is so icky. We were told that it had been professionally steam cleaned prior to us moving in, but that seems highly doubtful. Any ideas on how or what I should use to clean my carpet? I’m kind of on a tight budget so the best for the cheapest price would be great.
What should we do to keep the house fresh and aired out from pet dander?
April 30th, 2010We live in a cozy suburban home with two domestic short hair cats, and two dogs,(a teacup chihuahua and a beagle/hound mix). The cats are strictly indoors and the dogs only go outside to potty and for walks. We keep all of our pets clean and they are all well taken care of but the shedding and pet dander are becoming a concern of mine because they are irritating my allergies a little. We regularly vacuum but seeing as it’s too cold outside to leave the windows open to help keep the house aired out I was wondering the best way to keep the air in the house and everything in it fresh from pet dander and odors. Are there any sprays or cleaners? And would an air purifier or something like that help?
How do I clean my futon after my cat has peed on it multiple times?
April 29th, 2010I have a problem with my cat eliminating outside his box. He has decided he likes the futon best now (it being next to the box and grains from the box itself getting on it dont help) and he at first was just spraying on the futon (which stopped when he was neutered but started back up). Then he began peeing on it, and this morning he pooped. I am taking him to the vet for a urinalysis, but I need to know what to do about the futon, which though free to me from a family member, is a pretty nice quality futon. I know about using enzymatic cleaners.. but do I just dump something like Nature’s Miracle on it? Do I need to blot at it after i’ve done so? Do I need to rent a handheld carpet vacuum and how much can i expect that to cost?
Even with an enzymatic cleaner, i’m worried HE will still be able to smell it and will keep going there. He has done it multiple times now and my past cleanup attempts havent helped. I am thinking I may need to throw it out..
hi, i am mom of twins, boy and girl and they are 2 yrs old?

Best way to clean the (fabric upholstery) seats in my car?
April 27th, 2010Big problem! I REALLY need to clean the seats of my car, but a detailing place who will steam clean would be very pricey. Things have spilled recently, like milk (yikes!) and tea, and my puppy is an added factor. The car has an odd smell, and the seats have water marks on them. I don’t want to scrub with just an upholstery foam cleaner & brush, I need a deep cleaning. I purchased a hand wet vac, but my question is: What is the best method to clean these seats using a wet vac? What solution or product should I use? How wet should I get the seats before vacuuming the soap & water out of them? Is there something I need to be aware of (such as, is it not a good idea to wet vac the seats in the first place)?
I have all kinds of cleaners (resolve, bissell, etc) that I use on my house carpet due to the puppy. I have two wet vacs (a 9.6v and a 12v), and also some Febreeze for Auto (just to keep it smelling fresh afterwards) I just need some advice on how to do this effectively and get them CLEAN, free of odor and random markings. I’ll be cleaning the floor carpet and floor mats as well, if you have any tips for those.
Please help! I want to do the best job possible and do it correctly, I just need some tips or "do’s" and "do not’s" .
Thanks!!!
Keeping dark hardwood floors clean?
April 24th, 2010I have dark cherry floors in my main living area which are less than 1 year old. They are in good condition, but with 4 kids and multiple pets, 20 minutes after vacuuming and cleaning them, they look filthy again. Some wood floor cleaners make it look smeary and some make it seem like it has a residue. What is the best cleaner to use that leaves no residue or streaks or mess behind and is still safe enough for the wood? I prefer something that can be sprayed on with a trigger-sprayer as I have a wide terry-cloth covered mop that I use on this. Thanks.
What is the best cleaner to use in a steam cleaner for extra dirty carpets?
April 24th, 2010We are purchasing a house that was foreclosed on and has been sitting for about 6 months. The carpet is probably 3 years old and appears that a vacuum cleaner has never touched it…LOL! However, I believe the carpet will come clean, it’s just extremely dirty and has a lot of traffic areas in it. I have rented a steam cleaner to try to do it myself, but was wondering if anyone has any advice on any good cleaners to use in the system that they have had a great success with.

Would you visit this hotel? And if you would…please tell me why?
April 21st, 2010Melbourne, June 25 (ANI): Owing to a rather ‘ironical’ ad campaign, an Amsterdam hotel, which claimed to be ‘the worst hotel in the world’, has become a huge hit with travellers in the city.
The campaign, by advertising agency KesselsKramer, paints the Hans Brinker budget hotel in Amsterdam as dirty, uncomfortable and lacking basic necessities such as beds.
Although the advertisers promoted the hotel in dog poo, the 650-bed hotel is attracting customers in large numbers and runs at around 80 per cent occupancy even in the low season.
The hotel’s success is fully attributed the advertising campaign, which "takes honesty to the extreme" and are "revered and reviled in equal measure", said the company’s website.
The ads promote the hotel as "similar to hell, but without proper heating".
Dave Bell, Creative Director and Partner at KesselsKramer, said that the hotel has found a unique selling-point.
"Everybody is always trying to be the best, but there are merits in being the worst. May be more people should strive to be the worst at something, when you’re the worst you have a lot more room to be creative and do your own thing," News.com.au quoted Bell as saying.
In a YouTube video, the hotel promotes itself as "accidentally eco-friendly"- having a lack of services such as cleaning and elevators that are out of order means it uses less energy.
"The Hans Brinker budget hotel has been helping the planet, unintentionally, since 1970," said one advertisement.
"Here is a hotel where the light bulbs don’t work. A hotel whose showers have less hot water than is standard. Where elevators stay out of order for days. And whose vacuum cleaners’ buttons are rarely switched on," the hotel said in the YouTube video.
"To lessen our impact on the environment staff do as little as possible for guests. An eco-elevator ensures that the only energy spent going to the room is your own," said a poster.
"Leave the towel on the rack. We won’t wash it. Leave the towel on the floor. We still won’t wash it," said another poster.
Dog Section? Is it wrong to post this?
April 20th, 2010By: Tammy Swift, INFORUM
Good dogs can be created by nature. Good dogs can be created by nurture. And sometimes, well, good dogs just happen.
We first acquired Jake as a fat white puppy 7½ years ago. We picked him amid the best of circumstances: We talked at length about the responsibility beforehand, acquired an insulated dog house and kennel first, and took our time looking for just the right pooch.
We even bought “Dog Ownership for Dummies,” paying special attention to the sections on how to test a puppy’s temperament before taking him home. We learned it was better to get a “middle-of-the-pack” dog than an alpha dog or super-submissive littermate.
And when we arrived at the bucolic-looking farm where he was born, everything about Jake seemed ideal. He was a sturdy golden-Lab cross, reared by a conscientious, sweet-tempered mom. He had been raised amid lots of doting kids and four-legged siblings. He stayed with his mother until he was precisely 9½ weeks, laying the foundation for excellent socialization skills.
We took him to the vet, who raved about his superb temperament and health. We did everything right.
Our second dog, however, was acquired under much-less-favorable circumstances.
I got her at a pet store, despite everything I’d read that warned me about this. The purchase was based purely on emotion: I loved Kita’s intelligent eyes, bear-cub-build and sassy, little gait. Worst of all, I didn’t even OK it with Irwin.
I knew little about her background, beyond the fact she was a product of a black Pomeranian and a red toy poodle.
Everything in Kita’s sketchy puphood suggested trouble. She should be hanging out at street corners, smoking cigarettes and hanging out with other dog-linquents.
She should have suffered from a slew of health problems and behavioral issues. She should have starred on “The Dog Whisperer,” as a bad canine citizen who attacked house guests, had her way with couch cushions and developed allergies to everything from dust to oxygen.
Yet, oddly enough, Kita grew up to be a picture of canine health. She is robust, confident and well-adjusted. She seems completely oblivious to the fact she weighs 8 pounds; instead, she carries herself like some sort of Rottweiler/bull mastiff hybrid.
She has no allergies and few health problems. She fears nothing. And, despite a bumpy first few months of house-breaking, she has been childishly easy to train.
The golden-Lab, however, is another story. He weighs 90 pounds, stands about 26 inches high and looks as rugged as any hunting dog. Yet he has suffered a litany of health complaints. We have spent at least 0 on ear infections alone. He is allergic to everything from gluten to corn. And he has more problems with his backend than the Ford Pinto.
He fears many things: men with beards, small blond girls, bicycles, vacuum cleaners, hot food, ice cubes and the family cat. He has made numerous frantic visits to the emergency vet after developing everything from an eye infection to an ulcer under his tail.
He is an incredibly sweet dog. I can’t imagine life without him. At the same time, he is extremely high-maintenance – a complex bundle of neuroses, hang-ups and health problems.
Of course, I still think it’s wise to take the “Jake route” when shopping for a pup and to think carefully before acquiring any new pet. I’m well aware that I totally lucked out with Kita. She could have just as easily been a nasty fear-biter with luxating patellas and parasites.
At the same time, I’ve learned a valuable lesson.
You can never judge a dog by its mother.

Ok, so is this against YA regulations to post this? She writes an article for our newspaper..the Fargo Forum. If this is ok to post, can people email her about this and explain about puppy mills and bybs? Hopefully with all the info she’ll get from everyone, in the next week or two she’ll post a correction. Please be nice in emailing her, because I really think she has no idea about Pet Store puppies and where they come from and BYBs.
Please star. Do this for the poor dogs in puppy mills who are about to suffer more due to her followers buying pet store puppies. If they see a correction in the next couple weeks, they may decide against it.
This isn’t so much a rant as hoping people can come together and give this lady valuable information. I’m not sure if posting this article is wrong or not. If it is, I’ll remove it myself and email it to everyone on here that I know will give her that info.
Don’t report it. Just tell me if it’s wrong, and I’ll remove it.
Fourth poster….I didn’t write this. This was an article in our newspaper. My question is if this is wrong to post, and if people can email her. It’s not rocket science.
People who can’t be bothered to read the entire thing and figure out that I didn’t write this, that it was an article in our newspaper shouldn’t bother answering.
Ok, since people can’t seem to figure out the question in this..IS IT WRONG TO POST THIS AND CAN PEOPLE EMAIL THE REPORTER WITH INFORMATION REGARDING PUPPY MILLS?
Is the question clear enough now?
I’m HOPING people will email her with this info and maybe she’ll read it and do some research.
Then the general public here in town may do research as well.
No reputable breeder ever gives or sells their pets to pet stores. They NEVER sell to total strangers. All pet store puppies come from either Back Yard Breeders or Puppy Mills, both are equally bad.
Thanks everyone.
Sybil, that’s a thought. But one person on here said that some pet store puppies come from "reputable" breeders. I don’t want this reporter to see that and think that.
